A City Rich In History
Back in the 1920’s, Federal Highway U.S. 99 ran from Everett to Seattle and on down to Tacoma. What started as a small logging settlement eventually grew into Federal Way, named after that same highway, known today as State Route 99 or Pacific Highway South.
If you love stepping back in time, the Historical Society of Federal Way offers several local spots to enjoy and explore, including the Denny and Barker Cabins. The recently restored home of John Barker, one of the first settlers to make his home in Federal Way, gives you a glimpse of life back in the 1800’s. The Denny log cabin was originally built by David T. Denny, as a home for his real estate business, back in 1889. Located at the entrance to West Hylebos Wetlands Park, you can spend a day with your family, delving into the local history and culture of Federal Way.
Step Across the Ocean
You may not know it, but Federal Way is the sister city to both Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, Japan and Donghae, South Korea. At the Pacific Bonsai Museum, located on South 336th Street, you’ll find a wide range of bonsai specimens from Japan and Korea, as well as many other nations. Group tours of the more than 100 “living art” specimens are available – and admission is free!
If you enjoy nature, you’ll also want to plan a stop at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden. Located on Weyerhaeuser Road, you’ll find over 700 varieties of Rhododendron and other rare “companion plants”, collected from all over the world. If you love what you see, be sure to stop by the RSBG Nursery to take a bit of the garden home with you.
